She is just a vegetable and is in the state of Coma for last 38 years in ICU of KEM Hospital Mumbai. If read this article carefully I am sure you would ponder a while before leaving your comment!

What Happened?

A Nurse in one of the reputed Hospitals in Mumbai, India was brutally assaulted and raped by a ward boy working in the same hospital some 38 years back.

There after the nurse went into coma as one of her blood vessel supplying blood to brain got damaged badly.

Who Was She?

Her name is Aruna Shanbaug.

Having completed her Nursing course she decided to dedicate her life for the cause of humanity by serving the mankind with her expertise and she joined the famous KEM hospital, Mumbai as a nurse some 40 years back, where she used to discharge her duties very honestly and diligently!

That Unfortunate Day!

Being a disciplined nurse she reprimanded one of the sweeper for some negligence in the routine work because of which the sweeper got angry on her and nourished the grudge against her.

Waiting for the opportunity and having found one, on an unfortunate day he raped the nurse after assaulting her badly with the chain used for leashing the Dogs.

She was badly injured and went into the state of unconsciousness from where she could never come back, and today she is in Coma!

At The Mercy Of People!

Since then now it is 38 years She is in Coma, admitted in ICU of the KEM Hospital and is being looked after by the nurses of the hospital.

Her family members have already abandoned her!

Now she is on the mercy of staff of the hospital and few other kind hearted people who are helping her to have her nursing and food which is given to her by stomach tube.

Very Bad Condition.

It is said that the lady some times screams with frenzy when any male person approaches her!

This must be the impact she is having in her brain which she experienced as a result of a brutal rape which was committed against her!

All the while she is under the agony and pain of the incidence and she must be having all her body hormones disturbed and must be feeling very bad though she is in the state of coma!

How long can this continue?

The staff of the hospital is taking care of this lady and hopefully the expenses or the financial part is being taken care by the collective efforts of these people.

But the question is how long they are going to continue?

What is the guarantee in spite of all these efforts she will come back to normal, when nothing has come out positive for last 38 years?

Plea for Euthanasia by her Friend!

One of her friend who is attending her, who also wrote a book on this issue, approached Court to grant 'Euthanasia' or 'Mercy Killing' to Aruna who is in the state of Vegetable for last 37 in the year 2011!

Status Of Euthanasia in India.

It is understood that implementation of euthanasia is not an easy thing in India as there are various aspects attached to this issue right from the issues arising out of emotions, out of religion, out of Socio-cultural things, legalities and vested interests!

So passing an universal law for Conducting euthanasia is not an easy job!

Belgium, Holland and Netherlands are amongst the few countries in the World where the mercy killing is legal.

In India euthanasia is not legal but this is a debatable sensitive issue here, like in many other countries across the World!

Verdict of Supreme Court!

Verdict of Supreme Court!

As expected Supreme Court clearly rejected the request, in spite of knowing all the facts about this nurse in Coma as "Mercy Killing" or "Euthanasia" is not legal in this country.

My Personal Opinion About The Verdict.

I am not a supporter of the mercy killing but I have some questions about this issue to pose!

Under the present circumstances where even the family members have abandoned her, what will she do even if she comes back to live for her remaining life?

She already have spend best years of her life in Coma, will she have a quality life even if she survives?

Let Us Pray The Almighty For Her!

Since the Court has not given the permission for the mercy killing, all we can do at this juncture, is to pray the God for her, so that he would do the best to her in the interest of her well being!

What are your reactions on this entire issue? Please respond!! Thanks!

PS: Pictures published have been taken from Google Search. I sincerely convey my Thanks for that.

I am also not in favour of Mercy Killing!A debate is goung on throughout the World about this issue! In some countries Mercy Killing is legally permitted!

Coming to the last part of your response, though the parents abondoned her, but he hospital staff was very happy to know that the request for Mercy Killing was rejected, they distributed the sweets! A typical Indian way of expressing happiness!

Thanks for the nice comment dear friend jk!

Rao what an absolutely hard hitting article. Very hard to read but a pleasure (if that makes any sense). I believe that everyone has the right to die with dignity.
Best Wishes

That is true , but there are many factors to be taken into consideration before making the Mercy Killing as a Legal one!

Thanks for reading and responding dear Steve!

A touching and numbing share Rao, but indescribable cruelty. A poor soul at the receiving end. I always believe complete justice cannot be delivered within the constraints of human frailties. It is tough to decide one way or the other. For me, if I am in a vegetative state, I have told my family not to prolong the agony if there is little hope of recovery. But it is always a tough call. Rather than being left in agony, better to think of euthanasia in extreme cases after taking everything into consideration. My father was a highly qualified doctor but he refused medicine when he knew it will only go to prolong his life, and agony, by few days. A tough call anyway and depends on many factors - siva

I don't believe in mercy killings because I have read about people coming back that were deemed vegetables. We can not play God, we have to pray to God to have mercy on her. God's mercy is just and only He can make the decision.
Great work here.

though mercy killling is not legal in India, in my opinion there should be speacila cases and exceptions. for example : this particular case. there is no scope of living for Aruna. she has no one of her own. he has been in a vegetative state after being raped. and its not a matter of 2-3 years. its been almost 40 years. there is a limit to which a person can and should tolerate. for this exceptional case, i think she can be freed from this torture.
