More summer in the orchard
This explains how we spray the orchard and keep it bug free. This sprayer holds 400 gallons of spray material.
P. T. O. Orchard sprayer
This is the Metters 400 gallon orchard sprayer it will spray either concentrate or dilute spray. On dilute setting it will spray 400 gallons of spray on one acre, on concentrate it will spray four acre at 100 gallons per acre. It gets its power from the tractor PTO; to make it work properly you need a 65 HP tractor. We spray about 8 times during the season, to keep the insects out of the trees and fruit.
This is necessary in order to have a salable crop at picking time, which on some varieties starts in early September and continue on through end of October.
This is more of a time for maintaining the trees, the ground cover and making sure the trees are OK. As far as the orchard is concerned you are the doctor, physician and surgeon. If you see a limb dying out, you get the saw and cut it out. If you have gophers, get the traps and catch them before they damage the trees or dig the tunnels and make your water disappear. Also they will eat the roots off of the young trees and leave just a stick in the ground and suddenly it drops its leaves and dies. This is a constant job; you never seem to get them all, If you think you have trapped them all, some more will come in from the neighbors place. It is a constant war to keep them out.
Now we just kind of slip into fall and harvest time.
