The long term effects on children that are not only abused, but survive .
The trauma of seeing your father beat your mother leaves a child with a feeling of hopelessness, deviating mental capacity as well as the permanent scars that never fade.
Loving with love as the reason he beats, and love as the reason she gives for why she stays

Fight or flight

The amount of fear a woman experiences in an abusive relationship will remain with her for the remainder of her life. Something she may never recover from.
Going into any relationship after abuse carries its own baggage.
The constant fear to look over your shoulder and suspicious of a private number calling.
These programed thoughts of memories can still trigger the anxiety and fear.

Rule of thumb

Growing up it was a rule lived by and used against women in abusive relationships.
My father would say "rule of thumb is how I will run my house"
And he did.
Regardless of fact or myth, rule of thumb was used against women , giving the husband legal grounds to dicipline his wife and children. Barbaric to say the least.

After leaving a dysfunctional abusive marriage of 32 years it never ceases to amaze me by how many medical professional people will say to me after they hear my story, Well why didn't you just hang in there!!!!!!!! OMG, why would some one ask a person who finally gets the balls to leave such a question and especially a medical doctor, goes to show that doctors do not understand abuse!!!!
