Bible Study: The Gift of Tongues
This article is an overview of the Gift of Tongues and it explains the Holy Spirit and his job in the Christians life.
The Holy Spirit and the gift of Tongues
One of the most important of doctrines is the baptism in the Holy Spirit. People who accept Christ into their life and learn that God is the leader of their world and through him and his son all things are possible, however many people do not understand or even accept an important concept as part of their conversion to Christs own. One part of this is where the Holy Spirit is speaking with you in the prayer language called tongues.
The reason that many have not learned as much as they should about the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues is because when a person starts reading the Bible, they get to know Jesus personally and they get to know God personally, however even though the Holy Spirit is spoken of quite a bit, learning about this Spirit is quite a challenging concept that many people do not understand completely.
Who Is the Holy Spirit
Many people have heard of the trinity, even if they don't entirely understand the concept of the One God who is represented in three distinct persons (or entities). The three parts of this trinity is God the Father who is over everything and everyone. He is the fatherly God who has complete command of everything. Then you learn about God the Son, he is the communication, he fights for all believers. Your name is on his lips before the father and his name is what you need to call when asking for anything that you need. However very few know or understand God the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a part of the God Trinity, which means he is also omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. He is everywhere and always present in your life. He knows who you are and what you need. In fact his job is to be their with you, to comfort you and to ensure that you are made to be as God wants you to be. He lives in our everyday world with us and is always there for us.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 KJV
The job of the Holy Spirit is to hear us in our hearts and to ask God for what we need but do not have the words to say. He is there to help us with understanding the Scriptures, with teaching us how to discern the truth of the Bible and those who teach it to us, to give us those spiritual gifts that were given us by God and to be our comforter during times of pain and sorrow that would otherwise turn us away from God. He dwells within us to help us attain a closer relationship with God.
What is Tongues
Once a person has given his life to God and accepted Jesus as his or her personal savior, they are endowed with many new gifts that are brought by the Holy Spirit, one of these is the gift of speaking in tongues. This is where the person has the ability to communicate with God in a language that even the speaker does not know. This language speaks the truth and is considered to be prophetic in nature.
The Holy Spirit was promised by Christ and is still true today, he is here to communicate in with your soul and the use of tongues allows you to communicate your needs, wants and desires to God. While the gift of tongues is not the sole gift that the Holy Spirit endows us with, however it is one that we must learn to use and one that should be studied regularly. A person who speaks in tongues is using a real and powerful language, and for those who use it on a regular basis will find that it begins to sound like others who have this gift with actual words or actual grammar.
One thing a person should remember is that the Holy Spirit endows us with these gifts as he deems fit, while some get this gift, another may not. The Holy Spirit is teaching you how to pray and to communicate with God. You are speaking a real language that you may not recognize, but the One you are communicating with will understand every word.
