Are the Christian Novenas Powerful?
There are many traditional practices in every religion. Novena or praying consecutively for certain days is such a practice in the Catholic Church. Many of them believe that they obtain many favors through these prayers.
Are the Christian Novenas Powerful?
Catholic Church believes in the communion of saints and their intercessory mediation. There have been many special prayers and novenas from the beginning of the church. Some of these prayers and novenas have been considered very powerful.
One should have in mind that it is Almighty God, Who grants any favor. Saints are only intercessory mediators who join those who seek God’s grace through them. It is one’s Faith in God that does the ultimate work of getting the favor.
1) Novena to ‘Divine Mercy’
Novena to Divine Mercy was started by one Polish nun called Faustian. Today, this novena is gaining popularity throughout the Catholic world. It seems that in the year 1930, Sister Faustian received a message of Divine Mercy from Lord Jesus that she should spread the movement of Divine Mercy throughout the world. It is told that through Sister Faustian, Jesus also revealed special ways to obtain favors from God by praying the Novena of Divine Mercy which commemorates the passions and death hour of Jesus. Afternoon 3 O’ clock is supposed to be the death hour of Jesus. Hence it is the most apt time for this novena. Pope John Paul II, late Pontiff of the Catholic Church, encouraged this this Novena to seek the mercy of God.
Divine Mercy novena or chaplet
The Rosary with 5+53 beads, which the Catholics use for praying five decades of Rosary, is used for this Novena also. Usually in Rosary they say 5 ‘Our Father’ and 53 ‘Hail Mary’. This novena t begins with the sign of the Cross, one Our Father, one Hail Mary and the Apostles Creed.
Instead of ‘Our Father’, “Eternal Father, I offer You the body and blood, soul and divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world” is recited.
Instead of ‘Hail Mary’ say, “For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
At the end of each decade say, “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world”.
2) Novena to Immaculate Heart of Mary
Mother Mary appeared to saint Bernadette at Lourdes in France and announced, “I am Immaculate.” She is the loving mother of the whole humanity. She has been the hope of the faithful from the very beginning of the Church. Though there are many novenas to her devotion, Novena to ‘Immaculate Heart of Mary’ is considered to be a powerful one. It is recited on nine successive days. This Novena is recited to seek God’s grace through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
“O Most Blessed Mother, heart of love, heart of mercy, ever listening, caring, consoling, hear our prayer. As your children, we implore your intercession with Jesus your Son. Receive with understanding and compassion the petitions we place before you.” (The intention is mentioned here).
3) Novena to St. Joseph
St. Joseph was the foster father of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament says, “Go to Joseph” and the Catholic Church recommends the intercession of St. Joseph for any help.
It is traditionally believed that St. Joseph obtains favors of any kind, but particularly in family problems, financial needs, purity, dangers, work, housing and a graceful death. He is the
“O blessed Saint Joseph, tenderhearted father, faithful guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of God, we pray and beseech thee to offer to God the Father His divine Son, bathed in blood on the Cross for sinners, and through the thrice-holy Name of Jesus, obtain for us from the Eternal Father the favor we implore,” (Mention the intention)
